Las Cruces Biological Station

Today was the ultimate getting settled day. We met Rodo -- the assistant director of the Las Cruces Biological Station -- and he kindly gave us a thorough walkthrough of the property. Starting in the breathtaking botanical gardens, Rodo showed us a variety of different types of plant, insect, and bird species that are often found not only in Costa Rica, but around the world. Everybody couldn't help themselves but break out those fancy new iPhone cameras and snap some macro images of the flora.
We migrated our way down to the edge of the property and came across the biggest bamboo stand I've ever seen in my life. Native to China, this bamboo can grow to this height in just two months!! We found rotting bamboo chutes the size of our legs. We may or may not have used them as pretend megaphones.....cough cough Corbin.

Before we got much further, we walked right by the camouflaged White Witch moth. Even though it was at least 6-7 inches in height, it blended absurdly well into the tree bark.

After a delicious lunch, the brainstorming session began for project ideas. Fortunately, nobody got "scientist block," and five great projects were brought to life. I must say, the 2 to 1 student:faculty ratio is very impressive to see. I'm so excited to follow along and see how the projects turn out. With just a bit of time before dinner, we got to work on testing and fine tuning equipment before the big field day tomorrow.

Let it begin.
